Changes to Your Body as You Age

Starting on the day we are born, our body changes a lot. As we approach our teen years, our bodies go through a series of aging, or abnormal changes to our body, which makes it so our bodily functions start to decline. As our body makes these changes a lot of people in your life will probably  notice that their is something different about you.

Most illnesses and diseases start in our musculoskeletal system. That is why it is very important as you approach the age of 35, regardless of how active your lifestyle or how athletic you may be, you need to avoid injuries to your joints and muscles so you can reduce the risks of diseases. Things you can avoid that will help are: possible accidents, abuse, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, doing drugs, using tobacco and the list goes on and on. On the flip side there are things you can do to keep your body healthier such as: regularly exercising, healthy eating, hanging out with positive individuals, and staying away from places that have environmental toxins.

Another obvious thing you need to do is make yearly visits to your doctor. Your doctor will not only look at your physical health, but he knows your family history and will study that as well to see if there are any hereditary diseases that you need to be aware of. Your physician will study your family medical history to help him diagnose, cure, prevent, treat, and hopefully avoid diseases you may be prone to. As I stated previously, as we hit the age of 35 our bodies start to decline, and our sensory organs will start to want to take a “rain check.” You will also start to notice that your vision will be affected, since your eyes will no longer be able to focus on objects up close. For those of you that like the medical terminology, this is called presbyopia. You may have noticed that a lot of people in the world over the age of 40 typically wear glasses, bifocals, contact lenses, etc. However, we are starting to see more and more young people with these same needs, which shows us that for some reason the aging process is starting earlier. This could be linked to hereditary makeup, your lifestyle, your environment, and so on.

Not only do our eyes start to go as we age, but our hearing does as well. Some people may even go deaf after the age of 40. Once again the medical term for this is presbycusis. This is a common condition to aging people, you will notice as you start to age that you may not like things that you used to like. Such as, maybe when you were younger you enjoyed going to concerts, but now that you are older you don’t like them at all. This could be caused by the fact as you’ve gotten older your hearing has changed, meaning the high-pitch of your hearing is affected, which over time has worn down your lower hearing tone. You may often notice too that as your hearing starts to go that it seems like those talking to you are not making much sense. Since your hearing is not as it used to be, when people talk it will sound different. An example of this is the letter K may not sound like it used to, which obviously makes it hard to understand what someone is talking about. If you or someone you know is struggling with their hearing, you can help out by learning sign and body language so you can better understand each other. Then there are the other choices such as hearing aids or listening devices.

Another thing that happens as we age is our weight will change, especially for those that have a family history of obesity. By the time you reach the age of 40 your body fat can change up to 30%. Obviously that can of change can affect the body substantially.

We have been discussing natural signs of aging throughout this blog, but there is also some that are unnatural that you need to be aware of. An example of an unnatural sign of aging would be if you developed lung cancer from personally smoking or being around someone that does all the time.
