At Home Remedies to Battle Depression

Depressions seems to be running rampant in this day and age and many people are on anti-depressants. But if you could find things at your home that could help alleviate those blues or depression, wouldn’t you prefer to do that? John Lee Hooker, the American bluesman, said it best when he said, “It’s about being human, see? Everybody gets the blues. Even a rich man gets the blues sometimes.” Basically everyone is susceptible to getting the blues now and then, but you can beat it. Below you are going to find a list of some at home remedies that can help you before your depression gets out of control and takes too much of a toll on you and your family.

  1. Enjoy the ride! Basically what this one means is just sitting back and actually enjoying the ride, enjoying your life. We can often look at our lives as roller coasters, sometimes your going up and sometimes your going down, but your attitude is everything. When you’ve hit a dip, or a bump in the road, simply take it for what it is and don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill.
  2. Become Active! Often what can make you even more depressed is if you are just sitting around dwelling on your situation. So get up and get moving and occupy your mind with something other than what is bothering you, or causing you to be depressed. Do something that will get you out of your home and moving so you aren’t focusing on your situation for a time. Go for a nice walk through your neighborhood or for a jog. Going to the gym is a great stress reliever or playing sports. Visit with a friend that encourages you and uplifts you. Go to your local library or bookstore, grab a book and “escape” to another world.
  3. Cry if you want to! This doesn’t mean you have to do this in front of everyone, but it is very therapeutic and cleansing to shed some tears every once in a while. Crying can help you get a grasp on what is causing you to become depressed and will help you release some of that pent up energy. It truly doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, 5 or 95, big or small, shedding those tears will help you feel better. And it doesn’t cost you a thing. 🙂
  4. Boredom! I know this is going to seem kind of contradictory because we just said to get active, but believe it or not doing something that is completely boring and mindless can also distract you from your problems. For instance, find a spider web and just study its patterns. If your floor is tiled, count the tiles in a certain area. Get out your kids crayons or markers and just doodle. Doing mindless activities such as these will help you relax and take your mind off of things.

So these are just a few at home remedies that you can do to help alleviate the blues or depression. If you continue to be depressed for more than a couple of weeks, then you may need to seek outside help. But as much as possible, try to avoid self-medicating and try these at homes, medicine-free remedies to kick those blues to the curb.
