Why Positive Mindset is Important for Fitness

Many of you might be wondering what a positive mindset has to do with fitness. You may be thinking or saying to yourself, “It really doesn’t matter if I have a positive mindset or how I feel…I just need to “suffer” through and I will eventually lose the weight.” But the way you think, or a positive mindset or a negative mindset, DOES indeed play a big role in how effective your weight loss program is. If you keep telling yourself, “It’s not possible to lose this weight”, “I’m tired of trying”, “I can’t do this”, “I’m just going to be fat forever”…then guess what? Those thoughts will become reality! And that is the opposite of a positive mindset.
You HAVE to constantly have a positive mindset and tell yourself that you CAN do this & that it is worth it! When you change to a positive mindset and focus on the goal you seek, you will begin to influence the events that will allow you to achieve the desired results. Every one of you is capable of doing this…just few actually change from a negative mindset to a positive mindset. But for those of you that are serious about getting that body you’ve always wanted…or heck, just feeling better & having a more positive mindset then below are a few tips to get you started in the right direction.

Tips for a Positive Mindset:

  • Write your goal down
    • Whether you are trying to lose 5 lbs or 50 lbs, 2 dress sizes or 20 dress sizes, get more toned & defined…write your goals down & read them OUT LOUD every single day! This will change your negative thoughts to a positive mindset.
  • Change your thinking from “wishful hoping” to “EXPECTATION” This is key to creating a positive mindset.
    • Don’t just “think” you can lose the lbs…EXPECT to lose the lbs! Don’t just “think” you will wear a size 4 again…EXPECT to wear a size 4 again! Don’t just “think” you might get toned & defined…EXPECT to get toned & defined. This step will also start to change your thinking from negative to a positive mindset.
  • Visualization
    • This is where a positive mindset can really become quite fun. Visualize what you are going to look & feel like once you achieve all your fitness results. Take a “before” picture & put it on the fridge or bathroom mirror & daily (several times in fact) visualize what you are going to look like!
    • Writing your goal down, changing from a negative mindset to a positive mindset & visualizing how you are going to look are all things that will keep you moving in a forward direction to achieving your results. Remember, the battle is in your mind…and you ARE going to win and create a positive mindset!!
  • Discipline
    • Many of us fear the word discipline because we don’t like to fail. But in order to achieve and maintain results you are going to have to be disciplined and have a positive mindset. So just pick the time of day that works best for you to work out. Then stick to it! After a couple of weeks, you will have formed a habit, and you won’t be thinking, “Oh man, I have to do this again”…you will have a positive mindset and will be thinking, “I can’t wait to get to the gym and do this again!” The discipline is what is going to determine whether you succeed or fail. So be disciplined and keep a positive mindset!
  • Practice, Practice, Practice
    • As you all know practice makes perfect! 🙂 The more you put these tips into use, the easier it will become. Daily read your goals, keep a positive mindset, envision what you are going to look and feel like, and keep pushing yourself to achieve what you are after. You can do this! We believe in you, but you have to believe in yourself first. Remember, a positive mindset is the difference between reaching your goals and not reaching them. So strive for a positive mindset every single day.

Can you create a positive mindset with the placebo effect?

The placebo effect is the mystery of when a person’s symptoms can be alleviated by ineffective treatment, simply because the person believes or expects that the treatment will work. a.k.a ‘positive mindset’ The placebo effect is a psychological response to treatment. Physical changes don’t actually improve, but it is the perceived improvement (positive mindset) of symptoms that characterize the placebo effect.
So you may be wondering what causes the placebo effect. Good question. When researching this topic, I found out that, there isn’t a whole lot of understanding as to what causes this effect, other than

  1. The person believes, with a positive mindset, the treatment will work, therefore, it does.
  2. We are conditioned to believe that medicine makes us better.
  3. The conditioned response stimulates endorphines in the brain. The endorphines act as the body’s own “morphine-like” pain-killer. This is a very short term effect though.
  4. A doctors positive outlook in addition to the patient’s faith, and positive mindset, can reduce stress and anxiety in the patient. With the reduction of stress and anxiety it may reduce some physical symptoms.

So basically, the placebo effect is a very real and very powerful psychological response. People typically think that this is a response to bogus treatments, but it is actually present in all treatments. And a positive mindset will help with this.

Will a Negative Mindset  vs. a Positive Mindset Hurt My Fitness Goals?

The quick & to the point answer is YES, absolutely, positively YES!! To find out if you have a negative mindset vs. a positive mindset, let me ask you some questions:

  1. Are you one of those people that exercise on a regular basis, eat healthy, get enough sleep, BUT still can’t reach your weight loss goals and can’t figure out why? (If you answered yes, is this a negative or positive mindset?)
  2. Do you constantly think you CAN’T achieve your fitness/weight loss goals because of genetic limitations, age or past failures? (If you answered yes, is this a negative or positive mindset?)
  3. Do you think because you have worked so hard for so long that you should have achieved them already? (If you answered yes, is this a negative or positive mindset?)

Believe it or not a negative mindset vs. a positive mindset can affect your goals more than you may think. It’s those thought that come in and say to you,

  • “This is NEVER going to work, why am I even wasting my time!” (Negative or positive mindset?)
  • “I have been doing this for SO long now, what is the point?” (Negative or positive mindset?)
  • “Another brownie with ice cream on top isn’t really going to matter.” (Negative or positive mindset?)
  • “I’m just big-boned…this is just the way I will always be.” (Negative or positive mindset?)
  • “I’m already married and have kids, it doesn’t really matter how I look or feel anymore.” (Negative or positive mindset?)
  • “This diet may work for others, but it just isn’t going to work for me!” (Negative or positive mindset?)
  • “I can’t start now, the holidays are coming up…I’ll just start next year…” (Negative or positive mindset?)

Do any of those “excuses” or “negative thought patterns” sound familiar? If that is you, and you TRULY want to change the results you get for the BETTER, then you HAVE to change the way you think – you have to have a positive mindset!! Here are just a couple pointers to get you headed in the direction of a positive mindset:

  • First and foremost, when the negative thoughts start to come, replace it with a positive one (positive mindset). Change your “I can’t” to “I can!”
  • Realize that setbacks or “falling off the wagon” isn’t “if” it happens, it’s “when” it happens. Be OK with not being “perfect” and just take it one day at a time. Once again, change from a negative mindset to a positive mindset.
  • Surround yourself with people that are going to support your goals and push you towards them. Try to avoid people that are naysayers and going to make you think it’s not possible. The people you hang around will have A LOT to do with whether you have a positive mindset or a negative mindset. So be very careful who you spend the most time with. Make sure it is people that will push you away from negative thoughts and towards a positive mindset.
